The frenetic rhythm of the percussion culminates in a wave of contagious joy. Thousands of people gather to revel in the presence of Kings and Queens and smile at the playfulness of the Flag Bearers and the Masters of Ceremonies who glide along the avenue.
But it wasn’t always this way.
Carnival began simply, and in the early 20th century, it was a modest celebration known as Entrudo. Over time, it evolved, with groups forming, some even with their own headquarters and orchestras.
Despite the heavy influence of Brazil, Mindelo Carnival has preserved its traditions, notably the Mandingas.
A much-loved figure in Mindelo, it’s believed that the Mandingas phenomenon began around 1940.
Everyone is welcome to join in

According to history, that year, a ship carrying dancers from Bijagós, Guinea-Bissau, en route to the Portuguese World Exhibition in Portugal, made a stop at Porto Grande, São Vicente. The dancers disembarked and performed at Praça Estrela.
By the next Carnival, locals were already dressing and dancing like the Bijagós dancers. The Mandingas became a part of Mindelo’s Carnival, thanks to the well-known Capote. Since then, the Mandingas have continued to thrive, particularly in recent years, with the Ribeira Bote community as a shining example.
The Mandingas draw thousands of people in a remarkable display that keeps tradition alive.
