Between lava and vineyards: A 3-Day adventure on Fogo Island

Wrapped in the blue mantle of the Atlantic, the Island of Fogo stands out in Cabo Verde for its imposing volcano, the only one active since the archipelago was settled. Pico do Fogo, rising 2,829 metres above sea level, shelters the village of Chã das Caldeiras at its base.

Visiting Chã das Caldeiras evokes a mix of sensations, reflecting the contrasts of a village scarred by lava yet reborn at every opportunity. Here lie some of the most fertile lands in Cabo Verde.

cabo-verde-entre-lava-e-vinhas-uma-aventura-de-3-dias-na-ilha-do-fogo-014.jpgIt is impossible to remain indifferent to the landscape, with the volcano as its protagonist

Agriculture, vineyards, and livestock have drawn people to the foot of Pico do Fogo, with the village settling inside the volcano’s caldera. This speaks volumes about the courage and determination of the people of Chã, as noted by Historian and Professor Fausto do Rosário.

“Chã das Caldeiras deserves to be elevated to World Heritage status. And I am not just talking about the caldera of the Fogo volcano, with its 12 km diameter, the endemic plants, or the lunar landscape seen by those climbing Pico do Fogo. I’m talking about the community of Chã, where we find unique people,” he states.

The resilience that inspires Chã das Caldeiras

Since the 1500s, there have been 38 eruptions, 11 of which took place inside the caldera. In 2014, the giant last awoke, and in a fascinating yet treacherous serpentine, the lava flowed through Chã das Caldeiras, advancing into the villages of Portela and Bangaeira.

Today, those who visit Chã das Caldeiras can easily imagine how the lava consumed homes, farmlands, lodgings, restaurants, and hotels. Yet the community rebuilt itself, demonstrating the strength and resilience of the people of Chã.

Visiting Chã das Caldeiras is to witness the resilience of the Cabo Verdean people, which is also reflected on the other islands of the archipelago. A story marked by overcoming and adaptation, without ever losing the kindness and generosity so deeply felt through morabeza.

The Island of Fogo, renewed with the reconstruction of Chã

Today, Chã das Caldeiras, with its diverse range of accommodations, welcomes travellers from around the world, drawn to the Fogo volcano, the island's iconic landmark.

Between trekking trails that reveal a breathtaking, almost lunar landscape, adventure sports like climbing along the ridge that borders the village, and visits to lava caves and channels, Chã das Caldeiras is an invitation to adventure. It offers a chance to embark on an experience brimming with authenticity.

With guidance from local guides on Fogo Island, you may even spot the swift and agile Gongon bird, which can be seen nesting from September to June in Fogo Natural Park. The park spans three municipalities on Fogo Island: Santa Catarina (Chã das Caldeiras), Mosteiros, and São Filipe, the capital.

Climbing Pico do Fogo

Pico do Fogo is the highest point in the archipelago and an invitation to an unforgettable adventure that combines physical challenge with spectacular natural beauty.

The journey to the summit of Pico do Fogo is a unique trekking experience and has become a well-established competition, attracting some of the best international trail athletes to the island. This event is the result of coordinated efforts between the Institute of Sports and Youth, the National Environment Directorate, and the Cabo Verde Tourism Institute.

If you plan to reach the top of Fogo Volcano, expect a hike lasting between 4 and 6 hours, depending on your physical condition.

For a magical twist on the adventure, try starting the journey at dawn and witness a true spectacle of nature: the sun rising over the clouds and bathing the island in a golden light.

This view, combined with the freedom of being above the clouds, creates a sensation that will linger for a long time.

If you prefer a gentler option, choose the circular trail of Chã das Caldeiras, a less demanding alternative, ideal for those who want to enjoy the beauty of the volcanic landscape without the intense climb to the summit. This route allows you to explore the caldera more closely and witness how life adapts to such a unique environment.

Remember to bring the appropriate gear: sturdy and comfortable trekking boots, lightweight clothing, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, water, and some snacks.

Fogo Wine: experience the flavours of Cabo Verde

Discover the pleasure of enjoying incredible wine in a magical place for a truly authentic experience!

Fogo wine is produced on the volcanic slopes of Fogo Island, standing out for its unique origin.

The exceptional conditions of mineral-rich soil and the ideal microclimate give this wine a complexity of flavours and aromas that captivate even the most discerning palates.

By tasting this wine, you will discover an essential part of Cabo Verdean culture and tradition. It’s an unmissable oenological experience for those who appreciate authentic flavours and rich stories.

Wine production on Fogo Island originates from the vineyards of Chã das Caldeiras, Achada Grande, and São Filipe. Red, white, rosé, and passito—an amber-coloured wine made from the white Muscat grape, dried on the volcanic stones of Chã—are all produced here.

Over the years, Fogo Island's wineries have been the birthplace of high-quality wines, recognised on the international stage

One example is the "Chã Branco" wine from the Adega de Chã, which won a gold medal at the international competition “Mondial des Vins Extremes” in Italy.

Other award-winning wines include the Santa Luzia white and the Pico do Fogo reserve red, produced by the Maria Chaves Winery in Monte Barro.

Meanwhile, the Sodade winery/cooperative, which brings together winemakers from Achada Grande, Relva, and Corvo (Mosteiros), also produces red, white, and rosé wines under the Sodade brand.

And because morabeza, the warm Cabo Verdean hospitality, shines on Fogo Island, you are likely to be invited to taste the traditional Manecom wine, handcrafted by the locals. Full-bodied and semi-sweet, with a texture similar to port wine, this nectar is well worth savouring.
