Let’s now explore the remaining four wonders of Fogo Island.

#3 Natural Wonder of Fogo Island: Monte Velha Forest Perimeter, where life flourishes limitlessly

In an island where dark tones dominate the landscape, Monte Velha stands as an extensive green forest, showing how unstoppable life can be. This vast area, covered in eucalyptus trees, is vital for the local community, providing resources such as firewood for cooking and sheltering rich biodiversity.

Hiking through this forest allows visitors to discover the wonders it holds. Here, endemic species abound. Of the 87 endemic species of higher plants in Cape Verde, Fogo Island preserves 37, five of which are exclusive to the island, such as the tortolho.

A must-visit stop is the "Casa do Presidente," which hosted political figures of the country in the 1980s.

#4 Natural Wonder of Fogo Island: São Jorge Salt Flats and natural pools

In the municipality of São Filipe, the São Jorge Salt Flats are one of the natural wonders you should visit when travelling to Cape Verde.

This small fishing port with a beach protected by a bay houses natural pools carved out by the sea! For many, it is a perfect retreat for relaxation and swimming activities.

The location boasts rich marine biodiversity and excellent conditions for sport fishing. It’s also a cultural gathering spot during the traditional festivals held on May 18th, where the community comes together with music and joy.

The salt flats serve the nearby fishing community of about 80 people, with 20 fishing boats finding shelter on the beach. Watching the boats return from the sea is a colourful spectacle against the intense blue waters.

These natural pools, cherished by locals, are a true pride of the island, brimming with beauty.
The warm, crystal-clear waters, framed by black lava rocks formed by volcanic activity, create a stunning contrast with the blue ocean.

At first glance, you’ll fall in love with this tranquil paradise—the perfect spot for swimming and relaxation.

Besides its natural beauty, the Salinas pools are also known for their therapeutic properties, thanks to the high concentration of minerals in the water.

To make the most of this natural paradise, visit in the morning or late afternoon when the soft light highlights the beauty of the rocks and water, offering a peaceful and intimate connection with nature.
